World Gold Council Releases Visionary Report on the Future of Digital Gold

The World Gold Council (WGC) has unveiled a groundbreaking report titled A New Golden Age: Imagining the Future of Digital Gold, which explores how digital innovation could redefine gold’s role in the global economy. Developed in collaboration with The Future Laboratory, the report poses thought-provoking “What if?” scenarios to envision gold’s potential transformation in an increasingly digital world.

Rather than forecasting outcomes, the WGC’s objective is to inspire discussion among innovators, financial experts, and technology leaders about how gold could evolve in its form, function, and relevance. The report highlights three future possibilities: Pervasive Digital Gold, which imagines seamless, transparent gold transactions; DeFi Gold Rush, where tokenised gold could create new yield opportunities through decentralised finance; and The Next Gold Frontier, exploring cultural and digital applications such as “phygital” gold NFTs.

According to WGC CEO David Tait, the study extends the organisation’s ongoing Gold247 initiative, which focuses on enhancing transparency and trust across the gold ecosystem. Key elements include the Gold Bar Integrity database and the Standard Gold Unit (SGU) — a patent-pending universal digital benchmark designed to standardise gold trading and ownership in the digital era.
