The largest gem-quality ruby, Estrela de Fura, sells for $34.8 million at Sotheby’s auction.

At its Magnificent Jewels sale in New York City on June 9, Sotheby’s fetched record prices for a ruby and a pink diamond.

The largest gem-quality ruby ever to come to auction, the 55.22 ct. Estrela de Fura, sold for $34.8 million to a private Middle Eastern collector, exceeding its $30 million estimate and setting a world auction record for any coloured gemstone.

The Estrela de Fura, or “Star of Fura,” was fashioned from a 101-carat ruby. The original stone was discovered in July 2022 at Fura Gems‘ ruby mine in Montepuez, Mozambique.
