India Hosts Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai

The Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 commenced in Mumbai under India’s Chairmanship, bringing together representatives from KP Participants, Observers, and global industry stakeholders to discuss key issues concerning the international trade in natural diamonds. The meeting is being held from May 11 to 14, 2026.
Speaking at the event, KP Chair 2026, Suchindra Misra highlighted the significant role played by the Kimberley Process in promoting peace, safeguarding livelihoods, and strengthening legitimate diamond trade across producing nations. He underlined the importance of reinforcing trust in the system, improving cooperation among participants, and ensuring that the Kimberley Process continues to remain relevant and effective amid evolving global dynamics. He also noted that natural diamonds are a sustainable product and described the Kimberley Process as one of the world’s most progressive certification frameworks.
Over the course of the Intersessional Meeting, various Working Groups and Committees will hold discussions focused on the implementation of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, compliance and monitoring mechanisms, artisanal and alluvial diamond production, statistical reporting, and initiatives aimed at strengthening confidence in the natural diamond supply chain. The proceedings will continue until May 14, 2026.
The meeting is also expected to serve as a platform for Participants and Observers to exchange perspectives on emerging challenges and collaborative strategies to further enhance consumer trust in ethically sourced natural diamonds.
The gathering includes senior officials from the Department of Commerce, Government of India, representatives of Kimberley Process Participants, members of the World Diamond Council, Civil Society Coalition representatives, and other industry stakeholders.
India’s Chairship theme for 2026 centres around the 3Cs — credibility, compliance, and consumer confidence — with a focus on strengthening the future of responsibly sourced natural diamonds through constructive dialogue and international cooperation.
Established under the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/56, the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is an international initiative designed to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate diamond trade. Currently, the Kimberley Process includes 60 Participants representing 86 countries, with the European Union and its Member States participating as a single bloc.
India assumed the Chairmanship of the Kimberley Process on January 1, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to promoting responsible sourcing, transparency, and sustainability within the global diamond industry. As one of the world’s leading hubs for diamond cutting and polishing, India continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the objectives of the Kimberley Process.
