South African Diplomatic Team Visits BDB to Strengthen Diamond Trade Relations

A high-level delegation from South Africa, headed by High Commissioner H.E. Professor Anil Sooklal and Consul General Gideon Labane, visited the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) on April 29, underscoring efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in the diamond industry.
The delegation was welcomed by BDB President Anoop Mehta, GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali, BDB Vice President Mehul Shah, along with other committee members. During their visit, the officials explored the BDB premises, gaining insights into its advanced infrastructure and secure trading environment.
As one of the world’s leading sources of rough diamonds, South Africa remains a vital partner. Discussions focused on ensuring consistent supply, strengthening trade ties, and creating long-term value across the diamond value chain. Both sides also considered opportunities to expand institutional collaboration within the industry.
Emphasizing the 200-year relationship between India and South Africa, Mehul Shah suggested streamlining visa processes with extended validity for BDB members and staff to facilitate smoother business operations and improve the flow of rough diamonds. He also recommended showcasing South African rough diamonds at the India Diamond Trading Company within the bourse, improving direct access for a broader segment of buyers, especially MSMEs.
