GJEPC and IIGJ Udupi’s Intensive CAD Training Programme for Jewelry Designers

The GJEPC SEZ Sub-Committee, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ) Udupi, has led a cutting-edge CAD rendering training programme. This program, which ran from the 27th to the 31st of May, brought together designers for an intense 40-hour online training focused at understanding Keyshot software.

The training was conducted via Zoom and consisted of four hours of Keyshot teaching every day. This intensive format featured live demonstrations and hands-on practice. Participants also received ongoing support beyond class hours via a WhatsApp group.

The curriculum covers important themes for current jewelry design, such as how to create realistic gold color renderings with 18 different shades of gold and advanced diamond rendering techniques. Participants learned how to improve their jewellery renderings by altering the surroundings and lighting sources, making realistic animations, and creating lifelike photos of their 3D CAD models. The application also added plugins and resources to improve rendering performance, including as HDRI maps and gold and diamond materials.

The influence of this training was seen in the remarkable student work generated. Participants generated high-quality renderings and animations to demonstrate their newly acquired skills. These works, rendered in true color with alpha transparency and varied resolutions, demonstrated the advanced techniques and attention to detail taught in the course.

Participants enthusiastically applauded the course’s effectiveness, citing its major positive impact on their professional abilities. The session was rated as highly interesting and participatory, with many expressing high pleasure and a few calling it extraordinary. While most participants thought the resources supplied were appropriate, there were several useful ideas for allocating extra time to complete assignments. The instructor garnered widespread accolades for providing straightforward and effective directions. While assessments on the efficiency of online training versus traditional techniques differed slightly, most agreed that the program resulted in significant skill gain.

Valuable recommendations for improving future versions of the program were made, including expanding the duration to include more complex topics, increasing the frequency of courses to keep up with developing technology, and exploring potential for follow-up sessions. Additionally, there was interest in investigating the prospect of incorporating in-person sessions to enhance the learning experience.

By providing designers with cutting-edge skills, GJEPC and IIGJ Udupi are paving the path for creative and better jewelry designs, ensuring that Indian workmanship continues to shine brightly on the global arena.
