GJEPC Meets with Mumbai Customs Chief to Address Key Export Concerns

Smt. Prachi Saroop, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Mumbai, and Shri Manish Tiwari, Commissioner of Customs, Mumbai, met with members of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). The major goal of this meeting was to discourse on significant industry concerns. Shri Kirit Bhansali, Vice Chairman, GJEPC; Shri Ajesh Mehta, Convener of the Diamond Panel; and Shri Sabyasachi Ray, Executive Director were among the GJEPC representatives present.

The discussions primarily focused on critical aspects of the gem and jewelry trade, such as the appointment of expert valuers, the facilitation of e-commerce jewellery exports via courier mode, the consideration of allowing hand-carriage of gems and jewelry, the potential for customs duty exemption on historical imports of sawn diamonds, the implementation of a modern Risk Management System (RMS), and addressing issues related to the RoDTEP scheme.

The discussion ended on a pleasant tone, with Chief Commissioner Prachi Saroop and Commissioner Manish Tiwari acknowledging the GJEPC delegates’ concerns. They stated that substantial efforts had been done to facilitate the e-commerce export of jewelry via courier mode, opening the way for courier businesses to begin the shipment of their parcels.

The Chief Commissioner assured her of her full cooperation in addressing the other issues raised in order to promote frictionless trade and the incorporation of contemporary technologies for customs personnel.
