The Wagner Group, a Russian military organisation, received funds from four firms and one person in the gold and diamond industries. The US Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions against them.
According to the government office, the Central African Republic (CAR), the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and organisations with Russian roots “engaged in illicit gold dealings” to aid Wagner “sustain and expand” its force in Africa and Ukraine.
Brian Nelson, the Treasury’s under secretary for financial intelligence and terrorism, said that the sanctions “disrupt key actors in the financial network and global structure of the Wagner Group.” The Wagner Group partially finances its heinous activities by plundering the natural resources of nations like the CAR and Mali.
