Van Mahotsav at IIG: Honouring Nature Through Design and Purpose

The International Institute of Gemology (IIG) marked Van Mahotsav—India’s annual tree-planting festival—with a meaningful celebration that intertwined environmental awareness with artistic expression. This national initiative, aimed at highlighting the vital role of trees in maintaining ecological balance, aligns perfectly with IIG’s core values: cultivating talent in a field deeply connected to nature, driven by creativity, and grounded in responsibility.

Jewellery design, at its essence, draws profound inspiration from nature—whether it’s the natural brilliance of gemstones formed beneath the earth or patterns influenced by flora, fauna, and celestial elements. At IIG, where future leaders of the gem and jewellery sector are trained, nature is viewed not just as inspiration but as a guiding force. Like education, trees symbolize patience, nurturing, and strong roots—both have the power to leave lasting legacies and shape generations to come.

Ms. Gunjan Sapra, COO and Head of the Department of Jewellery Design, opened the celebration by emphasizing nature’s role as both a life-giving force and a profound source of creative inspiration. She reminded students that when they observe nature with care and intention, they unlock design narratives that are not only beautiful but also deeply purposeful.

In his keynote, Mr. Rahul Desai, CEO & Managing Director of IIG, stressed the importance of institutional and individual responsibility in protecting the environment. He affirmed IIG’s dedication to sustainable action—not merely as an idea, but as a way of life.

Mr. Desai also outlined steps the institute has taken towards sustainability, such as reducing plastic usage, digitizing course materials, and embedding eco-conscious values across its curriculum and infrastructure.

A major highlight was the Nature-Inspired Jewellery Design Competition, where students crafted unique jewelry reflecting the themes of nature. From intricate leaf patterns to artistic representations of flora and fauna, each piece revealed a deep respect for the environment and mastery of design principles. The winning creation—a stunning necklace by Ms. Kritika Jiwani—was inspired by the northern lights and featured Alexandrite to evoke their magical glow.

The entire campus joined in the celebration by adorning soft boards with themes like forest ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainability. These displays transformed the space into a gallery of visual storytelling, amplifying key messages of conservation, harmony, and ecological awareness.

The event concluded with a tree planting initiative and a symbolic green gift for every attendee, representing growth and a shared sense of responsibility. At IIG, Van Mahotsav goes beyond a customary celebration—it’s an embodiment of the institute’s core philosophy: that genuine brilliance stems from purpose. As it nurtures the next generation of jewellery designers, IIG remains committed to promoting not only creative mastery but also a deep respect for the environment.
