India Post has temporarily stopped accepting postal consignments to the United States, except for letters, documents, and gifts valued up to USD 100, starting 25 August 2025.
The suspension comes in response to US Executive Order No. 14324, which eliminates the duty-free de minimis exemption of USD 800 from 29 August 2025. Under the revised framework, all postal items sent to the USA—regardless of value—will be subject to customs duties as per the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
With transport carriers citing uncertainty over procedures for duty collection and identification of “qualified parties,” they have refused to carry US-bound shipments beyond 25 August. As a result, the Department of Posts has paused booking of parcels and merchandise to the USA until further guidance is available.
For consignments already dispatched but rendered non-compliant under the new rules, customers may seek postage refunds. The Department has assured that it is actively engaging with stakeholders and monitoring developments to resume full services at the earliest.
