The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) commenced the first Exporter and GCC Designers’ Workshop on 17th July at Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC, SEEPZ, Mumbai. This event serves as a significant prelude to SAJEX (Saudi Arabia Jewellery Exposition), GJEPC’s inaugural exhibition in Saudi Arabia, scheduled to take place from 11th to 13th September 2025 at the Jeddah Superdome.
The workshop was officially inaugurated by Mr. Milan Chokshi, Co-convener of PMBD, and Mr. Sabyasachi Ray, Executive Director of GJEPC, alongside prominent designers and industry figures. Special recognition was given to Ms. Mahima Varma and Mr. Tarun Jain, Founders of the World Academy of Design, Dubai, who collaborated with GJEPC to bring six prominent designers from the GCC region to engage with Indian manufacturers.
In his keynote address, Mr. Sabyasachi Ray emphasized the importance of this initiative in expanding India’s role in the dynamic Saudi jewellery market. He noted, “This design workshop is a key move to strengthen India’s footprint in Saudi Arabia, especially with jewellery imports projected to grow from $4.5 billion to $8.5 billion by 2030. By combining the creativity of GCC designers with India’s manufacturing prowess, we aim to develop region-focused collections. SAJEX 2025 aims to be a global platform, not just an Indian showcase, and this workshop is a crucial first step in that direction. The young and discerning Saudi audience is seeking unique, high-quality designs — and India is ready to deliver.”
Mr. Milan Chokshi added that this program reflects the broader evolution of jewellery design. “Indian jewellery has transitioned from replicating catalogue designs to producing original, modern creations that honor Indian heritage while appealing globally. As the Middle Eastern market modernizes, this collaboration allows GCC designers to tap into their cultural roots and work with Indian manufacturers to craft distinctive, world-class designs. The future of the industry lies in originality — and this is where that journey begins.”
Mr. Tarun Jain highlighted the significance of cross-cultural collaboration, saying, “This is about more than design — it’s about building a bridge of understanding between Indian manufacturers and the changing Gulf market. The designers involved are trendsetters who understand both present and future consumer preferences. They will help manufacturers align their offerings to regional tastes and enhance their appeal at SAJEX. This exchange of creativity and knowledge paves the way for lasting success in the GCC market.”
Through this initiative, GJEPC is fostering deeper India-GCC connections, encouraging innovation, and creating jewellery that appeals to modern global buyers. The workshop sets the stage for collections that celebrate cultural identity while capturing international attention, perfectly timed for GJEPC’s landmark Saudi Arabia debut at SAJEX 2025.
