
The announcement represents a new chapter for the institute, which has been instrumental in the diamond, gem, and jewellery industries since its foundation in 1971.
GII has long been known for providing complete laboratory services, diamond detecting technology, certification, research, and educational efforts. Notably, it created its own diamond identification system, Q CHECK, and was a pioneer in certifying colored gemstones. The institute is a collaborative project backed by leading industry organizations such as GJEPC, BDB, DEAL, MDMA, and GJEA.
A seasoned leader takes over.
With over four decades of experience in the diamond industry, Mehul Shah is well-known for his skills in diamond certification, grading, and technological breakthroughs. Industry members have welcomed his appointment, seeing him as a viable replacement to outgoing Chairman Anoop Mehta, who is credited with increasing transparency and professionalism at GII.
Continuing the Legacy.
Shah expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and praised his predecessor’s accomplishments. “I applaud Mr. Anoop Mehta for taking GII to its current heights. “I will strive to meet his expectations and earn the trust that the industry has placed in me,” Shah added.

Looking ahead, Shah stressed the growing significance of artificial intelligence and automation in grading, certification, and diamond discovery. He discussed intentions to strengthen GII‘s educational programs and expand its reach throughout India and the Asia-Pacific region.
