Gemological Science International (GSI) has inaugurated its new state-of-the-art laboratory in Kolkata, a major milestone in its mission to deliver world-class gemological services to one of India’s premier jewellery manufacturing hubs. The launch event, graced by prominent retailers, dignitaries, and industry leaders, received strong support, reaffirming GSI’s reputation as a global, technology-driven authority in diamond and gemstone certification.
The facility marks the next step in GSI’s vision to close industry gaps by offering precise, technology-led reports and innovative digital solutions. “At GSI, we are more than a gemological laboratory; we are a solutions provider. Our focus lies in empowering the jewellery industry—whether through standardised grading, comprehensive reporting, or advanced digital innovations,” said Ramit Kapur, Managing Director, GSI India. “This lab further strengthens our commitment to equipping retailers with cutting-edge tools and expertise to stand out in a competitive market.”
The inauguration was led by industry stalwarts including Mr. Pankaj Parekh (Regional Chairman East, GJEPC), Mr. Suvro Chandra (Joint MD, P.C. Chandra Jewellers), Mr. Ashok Bengani (President, Calcutta Jewellers Welfare & Ankurhati Associations), and Mr. Amit Soni (CoA Member, GJC), along with other leading jewellers from Kolkata. Together, they welcomed GSI’s efforts to bring global-standard certification and technology-backed solutions to the Eastern region.
Attendees also explored GSI’s latest innovations, including advanced diamond screening systems and digital grading reports, designed to give retailers greater confidence and a competitive edge.
Strategically located near Camac Street—the heart of Kolkata’s jewellery hub—the new laboratory is set to deliver high-quality certification services with rapid turnaround times to manufacturers, retailers, and traders.
“Kolkata has a uniquely vibrant market, and GSI is here to ensure that every stakeholder, from manufacturers to retailers, can depend on our expertise for the highest standards in diamond and gemstone certification,” Kapur added.
