World Diamond Council President Calls on KP to \u2018Cross the Line\u2019 Toward Landmark Reform<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Feriel Zerouki, President of the World Diamond Council (WDC)<\/a>, opened the 2025 Kimberley Process (KP)<\/a> Plenary with a strong appeal for members to endorse an updated definition of \u201cconflict diamonds,\u201d signalling a crucial turning point for the global certification system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She acknowledged the intensive three-year effort of drafting and negotiations driven by the WDC<\/a>, and praised the leadership of the African Diamond Producers Association (ADPA)<\/a> and the Civil Society Coalition. \u201cAfrica has made its desire for progress unmistakable,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2025 KP Plenary is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 17 to 22, under the chairmanship of the UAE for the 2025 cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gathering brings together delegates from 86 KP participant governments, the WDC<\/a>, the Civil Society Coalition, the ADPA<\/a>, as well as numerous observer bodies and technical specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the week, members will evaluate the work of KP committees, negotiate the proposed broadened definition of conflict diamonds, and address key issues around governance, oversight, and compliance that safeguard the integrity of the global rough diamond trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are standing at a pivotal junction,\u201d Zerouki<\/a> remarked. \u201cWill participants push the Kimberley Process<\/a> forward, or will others choose to stall it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zerouki<\/a>, whose presidency runs until May 2026, underscored that an expanded definition would offer protection to 1.5 million artisanal miners and empower KP action in vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
