The move reflects growing caution amid <strong>global geopolitical tensions<\/strong> and increasing concerns about keeping sovereign assets overseas\u2014particularly after the <strong>G7 nations froze the foreign reserves of Russia and Afghanistan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>September 2025<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbi.org.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RBI<\/a>\u2019s <strong>total gold holdings<\/strong> reached <strong>880.8 tonnes<\/strong>, with <strong>575.8 tonnes<\/strong> now stored within India. This marks a clear effort to strengthen <strong>economic sovereignty<\/strong> and protect the nation\u2019s wealth from potential <strong>financial sanctions or global instability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The repatriation, combined with <strong>surging gold prices<\/strong>, has also raised gold\u2019s share in India\u2019s <strong>foreign exchange reserves<\/strong> to <strong>13.9%<\/strong>, highlighting the central bank\u2019s strategy of <strong>diversification and risk management<\/strong> in an increasingly uncertain global environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of September 2025, India\u2019s <strong>foreign currency assets<\/strong>, totaling <strong>$579.18 billion<\/strong>, were distributed across <strong>$489.54 billion<\/strong> in securities, <strong>$46.11 billion<\/strong> in deposits with other central banks and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), and <strong>$43.53 billion<\/strong> in deposits with overseas commercial banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, as of <strong>March 31<\/strong>, the RBI held <strong>879 tonnes of gold<\/strong>, with <strong>512 tonnes<\/strong> stored domestically and <strong>348.6 tonnes<\/strong> under custodial arrangements with the <strong>Bank of England<\/strong> and <strong>BIS<\/strong>.
