Following President Trump<\/a>\u2019s Executive Order issued on 5th September, American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) President Bruce Bridges<\/a> and CEO John W. Ford Sr.<\/a> traveled to Washington, D.C. during the week of 15th September to discuss import tariffs on gemstones directly with U.S. policymakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their meetings included discussions with Cabinet departments, the White House, and trade officials at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, as well as with several lawmakers, among them Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Representatives Darrell Issa, David Rouzer, Ronny Jackson, Mike Bost, and Randy Weber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Executive Order opens the door to zero reciprocal tariffs on goods \u201cthat cannot be grown, mined, or naturally produced in the United States,\u201d with Annex III specifically listing gemstones under Potential Tariff Adjustments for Aligned Partners (PTAAP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AGTA<\/a> welcomed the recognition of gemstones in the order and sought further clarity on its application. Officials indicated that reciprocal trade and security agreements with individual partner nations are required before tariff reductions can be implemented. U.S. trade representatives also encouraged AGTA<\/a>\u2019s willingness to liaise with source countries to advance trade negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
